We all have a lot to say, but sometimes the greatest truths are found in asking the right questions. So here goes, you fill in the blanks with the answers, really. That’s the easiest thing in the world to do. And let the truth set you free...
1. Has China attained Democracy yet? Chinese democracy is out NOW, isn’t it?
2. Has Dr. Pepper fulfilled its promise of handing out free sodas when they do release the album?
3. Where in the world is Matt Sorum & Slash? Licking their wounds, perhaps?
4. What has happened to Velvet Revolver ever since Scott Weiland pulled a ‘Stone Temple Pilots’ rendezvous on them?
5. Does AXL give a shit about all the opinions, rumors, ribbing, trash-talk that have been the order of the day for a while now?
6. Does Chinese Democracy kick butt emphatically? Are you shitting me?
7. And, finally, who the f*** is Chuck Klosterman? Why should his opinion on the nuGnR album count for anything?
8. And why do some people still whine about what the actual lineup of GnR is or isn’t? Isn’t it about time that we all moved on?
9. And if you don’t like what you’re reading... do I care?
10. And most of all, if you do, what are you going to do about it? Call the brain-dead fashion police?
[If you’re a lil’ peeved at this point, humor me... will you?]
Truth is stranger than fiction, and in the case of AXL, I’ve seen people constantly deluding themselves about his overrated skills, his anti-social behavior, his irreverent antics and hateful lyrics.
And the rumor mill grinds on replete with these self-righteous fools who spin tales of death, dementia and the doldrums... the internet is a breeding ground for such elements to voice their opinions... Er...and by the way, if you’ve watched the movie ‘Platoon’, you’d be familiar with the phrase ‘Opinions are like ass*****, everyone has one of ‘em’.
Comprende, amigo?
So it’s time, for these shmucks to bend over and kiss their “opinions” goodbye... for the nuclear disaster a.k.a The Onslaught of Nu-GnR a.k.a the one-man revolution AXL mu-fuh Rose is back with a BANG!
Go AXL!
OK, enough of this Ra Ra cheerleader s***, and let’s get down to business...OK? While I write this piece, I am listening to the album ‘Chinese Democracy’ and I’m hooked man! Even the songs that you don’t like at the first hear, grow on you after a couple of listens.
Ever since, Judas Priest’s vocalist Rob Halford left the scene and with the advent of pop-rock, alternative-rock and the other sub-genres that have just come out of nowhere... “Rock”, as it is, has taken a serious nosedive in terms of performance, the oomph-factor and some serious musicianship.
It’s like George Carlin calls these neo-rockers, young urban pus** boys playing music like men without t******es! I roared with laughter and in vociferous agreement to the same.
Trust me... this is truth... bittersweet... but the unadulterated truth... in a world where music seems sold out to popular trends...
Rock is all about ’sticking it to the man-in-charge’ quote Jack Black from the School of Rock... and what we have now is a whimpering, wussy-like, four-chords-are-enough-minus-the-guitar-leads music that is dished out in the guise of ‘rock music’... and has completely wiped its a** with the sheisters of the corporate world. What a travesty!
But I digress... that’s why this album, to me, does not conform by any stretch of imagination. This is just the beginning, really.
So, here’s what you’re gonna get if you get the album... and I think you should, too.
For starters, AXL’s at-its-very-best screeching vocals that we love, recognize, recall and rave about with religious fervour is back with a VENGEANCE! Unreal! Listen to ‘Scraped’,'Shackler’s Revenge’ and da song to beat ‘em all... Rhiad and the Bedouins! The sudden scale changes in the vocals made me go: Sweet Jesus!
[Dan takes a bow in the presence of musical genius]
Riff-o-mania rules on this album, sharp lyrics running free with metaphors, tinged with intense thought provoking innuendos and right up in your face too! Buckethead is something else. I loved how he served up a riff or two during the verses of ‘Chinese Democracy’ to end it off with super-rocking lead solo. Mark these words as I normally never defer to anything as ’super-rocking’, much less the music that’s produced today.
Well, the songs ‘Street of Dreams’, Catcher in the Rye, ‘There was a time’ are rather easy-going in comparison to the others. I.R.S is a dark and trippy number, in composition and ‘Prostitute’ is just plain weird, lyrically speaking. I expected something really nasty. The only tracks I wasn’t too enthu about was ‘Sorry’ and ‘Madagascar’, but man... call it what you will but this album is anything but a flash-in-the-pan...
Bottomline: Nothing was overdone. [Chuck Klosterman... you’re funny... and you’re right about one thing... this is an album that has a definitive modern sound yet is heavily nuanced with sounds of albums of yore. And you can kiss my big fat opinionated you-know-what too.]
And for the rest of you, I’m sure you want to hate the man, but just love the music. Keep it that way, please. Keep your judgements to yourself... and let’s stick to the music, please.
Go buy this album, if you appreciate good rock or just nostalgic about the good ole’ GnR days or just love AXL Rose and what he stands for... like I do! :)
