Monologue as spoken by John Milton (Al Pacino) in the movie ‘The Devil’s Advocate’
“These people, it’s no mystery where they come from. You sharpen the human appetite to the point where it could split atoms with its desire, you build egos the size of cathedrals, fiberopticly connect the world to every-eager-impulse, grease even the dullest dreams with these dollar-green gold-played fantasies until every human becomes an aspiring emperor! Becomes his own God! Where can you go from there? And as for scrambling from one deal to the next, who’s got his eye on the planet? As the air thickens, the water sours, even the bees honey takes on the metallic taste of radioactivity–and it just keeps coming! And it just keeps coming! Faster and faster! There’s no chance to think, to prepare, it’s `buy futures, sell futures’ when there is no future!! We’ve got a runaway train, boy!! We’ve got a billion Eddie Barzoons all jogging into the future.”
To me, this is one of the most compelling monologues ever uttered in cinema, by the man himself!
The excerpt is from the movie ‘The Devil Advocate’ starring Keanu Reeves, Al Pacino and Charlize Theron, where John Milton [played by Al Pacino] is justifying the death of Eddie Barzoon, which is about to happen as he ends the speech.
I hail from a strong Christian family where both my parents are fundamentalist Christians... and they carry very strong views on what is right or wrong in this world. I believe in the Bible but I would not want to really get ‘heavy duty’ and shun good entertainment. Now would I? [Chuckle]
Personally, I’m not one for the dark side, but this movie is so appealing because it suggests so much but never really states anything. That’s the best part. It leaves you to think about it. All you see is the balance of the scales shifting from one side to another, with the ‘for’ and ‘against’ arguments made pertaining to God, Christianity and the faith that is required to live the ‘Christian’ life.
If you have very strong Christian views, I suggest you don’t watch this movie as some of it might seem offensive.
I do believe that movies at the end of the day are made for a purpose... yes, even this movie... as some of the content is a bit nasty even for me... but I absolutely loved ‘John Milton’, the part played by Al Pacino... who fit right in! Great show! [Danny takes a bow]
As a movie, I feel that it doesn’t belong in any particular genre which is what makes it quite an oddity... that’s why it stands out for me!
It is truly a reminder that at the end of the day, we are susceptible to temptation... saints yet sinners and vice-versa... and there’s nothing wrong with it... we’re HUMAN, you see! And we can always redeem ourselves, just maybe...
On a funny note, we went out with four women to watch this movie, and during the scene where Keanu gets going with Charlize, the “worm in me” surfaced. The girls were chuckling. But to my defense, how was I to know that they’d roll that long lustful scene out for so long. Haha!
But all in all, this is a classic… which should be watched by those who have an open mind when it comes to spirituality etc. In short, Whatta rush!!!

John Milton here, speaks in greater authority than Milton’s voice of the fallen Seraph, no ”verbal paradise” lost here!
Post is w...o...w!
The interesting thing is purely for irony, the scriptwriters intentionally named Al Pacino’s character John Milton... of course, you know that he wrote ’Paradise lost’ as you made a mention of the ’fallen seraph’ etc. etc.
You’re kind! Thanks once again. :)
the monologue is in the same spirit, as any of Satan’s speeches in the epic...
I LOVED HIS SPEECHES, this sem :) !
i might check out the movie...good stuff!
the speeches, electrifying, a self-contradiction that fellow was, Satan, i.e.!
